Where I Belong

John Denver is not just my favorite singer—his music has been the soundtrack of my life. I first heard his songs on a drive with my dad. Then my brother and I started listening to him, with my brother “accompanying” him by playing guitar on a tennis racket. Monty and I both loved John Denver’s music—we had a friend sing “Annie’s Song” at our wedding. To this day, his songs are always on our playlists.

I put this poem together using only songs performed or written by John Denver. The lines are borrowed from him; the theme and organization is mine.

Where I Belong

– R.A.P.

All alone in the universe—
on the road and hanging by a thread.
I see the light of those flickering stars
and right there by my side, much to my surprise,
was you.

Let me ask of you one thing:
make it part of you to be a part of me—
we weren’t meant to be lonely.
I’ll cling to the warmth of your hand—
take me home.
Hold me like you’ll never let me go.

I swear to you our time has just begun—
you’re here in my heart to stay.
You fill up my senses
with all the radiance that sudden sun discloses.
And in the quiet stillness
I can hear symphonies,
talk of poems and prayers and promises.

The promise of tomorrow is real—
the pledge of my life, my love, for you.
Safe in your arms,
the place I belong,
take me to tomorrow—
come fill me again.
