Recovery

I’m a recovering alcoholic and drug addict. Darkness and desperation have been my lifelong companions. And there was a time when I would have ingested anything to stave them off. I have known very dark nights when my soul begged for oblivion. I have known the awful feeling that sets in when you realize that you can’t live with your substance of choice any longer—but you don’t know how to live without it. And now, I know the beauty and freedom that can be found in recovery. I am hyperaware of the blessings and miracles of every new day because I remember what it was like to pray that I wouldn’t wake up to a new day. I never want to forget the soul-sick place I was in when God met me and asked me to get up off the floor and take the next step with Him.

That’s what recovery is about—steps. Baby steps. Giant leaps. Setbacks. Stumbles forward. And in all of it—trusting God with my present and future and letting Him heal the wounds from my past. He has taken a life that was strewn with brokenness—fractured relationships, mental health issues, and damaged self-esteem—and transformed it into a life of beauty and blessings far beyond anything I ever could have dreamed for myself. And I am so, so grateful.

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory. . .“Eph. 3:20-21a
