– R.A.P.

As a child I was happily invisible
at family reunions,
moving through the grown-up world
of coffee cups and card games,
hoping to hear the battle cry of pitch:
“Shoot the moon!”

Those words always made me think of you,
my big little brother,
never invisible in your red cowboy boots and overalls.
I believed you could aim your trusty cap gun
at the moon
and shatter it with one shot,
filling the sky with pieces
that would shimmer and spark like
millions of fireworks falling down around us.

You were fireworks—explosive, colorful, dynamite.
I was the glittering trail forever in your wake,
following your fearless lead.
Even now, you make me feel brave—
brave enough to step out of the shadows
and shoot the moon
with hands wide open,
ready to catch fire.
