Remember Who You Are

Everyone has a backstory–a story about how they came to be who they are. This is mine.

Remember Who You Are
– Renee Adele Phillips

I am summer.
I am swing sets and sprinklers,
“Sunshine on My Shoulders” and my brother’s blue eyes.
I am kittens and Kool-Aid,
casseroles and Tupperware.
I am Sunday school,
white tights and the Lord is my shepherd.
I am maroon hymnals and do this in remembrance of Me.
I am a secret garden of great expectations;
I am I think I can.

I am asthma.
I am a little girl with grown-up fears,
trembling on the edge of every breath.
I am an ER with no exit,
speeding and crashing and speeding and crashing.
I am in-valid:
I am a world of can’t.

I am the beautiful,
summa cum laude and toasts to the happy couple.
I am the damned,
speeding from rhapsody to ruin,
crashing between delight and devastation.
I am chaos.
I am pain.
I am empty bottles and a wasteland of excuses.
I am the reason for can’t.

I am amazing grace.
I am “The Lord’s Prayer” and one day at a time.
I am serenity,
a cat holding sunlight.
I am poems and paragraphs;
I am dances with words.
I am June and prairie daisies,
“Annie’s Song” and meteor showers at midnight.
I am my own renaissance:
I am the reason for can.

  1. A beautiful backstory to your strengths and yes, fears. I know you already know this, but, never forget how your fears have made you the woman you are today. INFINITE BLESSINGS!!🙏🏼❤️🐾🐾🐈

  2. Yes, Sparrow, you are all these things. You are a Beauty, a Precious Gem, You are “The Sunshine”, in everyone’s eyes. I will take liberties, with the “Teddy Bears”, hit of the 60’s, “To Know You, is To Love You” (actually, Him), I took some liberties with the title). But, yes it is true. Your writing is heartfelt, sincere, that’s what makes it so appealing. Keep on blogging, Sparrow. Love ya. TexGen❤️
