We Gather Together

Today I asked our cats to tell me what they’re thankful for, since Thanksgiving is in a few days. Monty even agreed to contribute to this one. So here are the boys, me, and Monty telling you what we’re thankful for this year.

Me: Okay, boys. Let’s hear your lists.

Seamus: I’d like to request that I be dismissed.
Peace out, my brothers. I need a nap.

Me: You will participate. Bring your royal self back.
Mackin, would you like to be the first one?

Mackin: I’m grateful for my dad. My list is done.

Me: What about Carrick? Aren’t you thankful for him?

Mackin: Oh, yes I am! He’s my best friend!
I’m also thankful for boxes to sit in—
if I can’t sit with my dad, I find a box I can fit in.
And I love it when the newspaper falls on the floor;
I scratch it and scratch it and scratch it some more.
It doesn’t matter to me that I can’t read it—
I can sleep on it, tear it, and I even knead it!
Mostly I’m thankful for my wonderful dad;
his pants, hands, and face just make me so glad!

Me: Carrick, you’re next. What are you thankful for?

Carrick: There are so many things, and I keep thinking of more!
I’m thankful for heating vents that warm me at night,
since Mommy won’t buy me a blanket that’s right.
I’m thankful for the birds that play in the snow;
I watch them all day while I sit in the window.
I’m grateful for Daddy’s plants with big leaves—
he says ‘’Carrick stop!’’ but I make them my feast.
I’m thankful I’m Irish—I drink, fight, and play.
I asked Mommy for Guinness, but she said no way.
I’m thankful for the toad I’m getting for Christmas—

Seamus: I cannot endure this foolish toad business!

Me: Why do you think that you’re getting a toad?

Carrick: I’ll ask Santa for one—why would he say no?
Mostly I’m thankful for a family that loves me,
even Seamus because it’s such fun when he hunts me!

Me: Seamus, it’s your turn, and you better be nice.

Seamus: Oh, good lord, woman! I can behave when I try.
I’m thankful for my food and all of my treats—
I pity hungry cats that live on the streets.
I’m thankful that Carrick is a pipsqueak—so small!
If I squint my eyes right, I don’t see him at all.
I suppose I am grateful for Dad (such a peasant),
but he gives me medicine which I find quite unpleasant.
I’m grateful my mother has a warm, soft lap—
I stay in it for hours when I want to nap.
I’m thankful I learned how to tear down the blinds;
I can see out the windows when I want, day or night.
I’m also quite grateful for my clean, filtered water;
I won’t drink from the tap like my mother and father.

Me: Okay, Monty. Hit it—now is your time.

Monty: I’m thankful for things, but do they have to rhyme?

Me: You know that’s the way we roll around here.

Monty: Yes, we live in a nuthouse. That much is clear.
I’m thankful for my job, for the boys, and for you.
I enjoy our cat family and the things that we do.
I’m grateful that Mackin is always with me,
and Carrick sits in my lap when I play “Call of Duty.”

Me: What about Seamus?

Monty: Oh yeah, Seamus, too.

Seamus: Good lord! I am shocked. How incredibly rude!

Me: Don’t worry, sweet Seamus. You’re at the top of my list.

Monty: What? Where am I? Do I even exist?

Me: You sound like Carrick. Of course I’m thankful for you!
I can’t list all the ways—there’s so much you do.
I’m thankful for this family that you and I made—
I agree that we’re nutty, but there’s nothing I’d change.
There are so many people who can’t be together this year—
I’m so very grateful the five of us are here.

Seamus: And with that I am leaving. I’ve had quite enough.

Me: Admit it, Monty—it wasn’t really that tough.

Monty: It makes my head hurt to bust out in rhymes.

Me: Just imagine if you did it all of the time!
Welcome to my world—nonstop words are my living.

Monty: Let’s end it right here then. Happy Thanksgiving!

  1. Hello Sparrow, Kudos, for a “fun blog”. Cats sure do have interesting conversations, don’t they. Since reading this blog, I have questioned Bradley, a couple of times,what he has to be thankful for. Unfortunately, I have not been able to extract an answer I can decipher. But, rest assured I will. Continue my efforts. I feel very thankful for family, Debbie, the kids, the grandkids.But, since meeting you, Monty and the cats, I put you all on my top ten list. As I have mentioned, with 100% honesty, humility, You are #4. I wish you, Monty, the cats, your family, a Blessed Thanksgiving. Stay safe, always. Love ya, Sparrow… ❤️TexGen

    1. TexGen–they are the most interesting of all conversations! You will figure out Bradley’s language–you’re a very good cat dad to try so hard. 😊 It touches me so deeply that we are on a list of things you’re grateful for. You and your bride are on my list as well. And I’m very grateful to be #4. Stay well and give Bradley a hug from me. ❤

  2. I am thankful for this beautiful post and the beautiful song! I am thankful that I read about Carrick, Seamus, Mackin and Monty and your wonderful family and I know that family time is the best part of living life! I am thankful for the food we eat every day, a cozy blanket when a breezy night, a cup of tea or coffee and savoring it .I am also thankful for my teenagers and my furry kids, my wonderful sister, brother and nieces and nephews. May you have a beautiful Thanksgiving and although we are not able to be together in large crowds with our love ones, we know we love them and they love us! Blessings always!!

    1. Estela–once again, your beautiful words encourage me. I love your list of things to be thankful for–there are so many still. I’m grateful that you and the rest of your family are staying healthy and well. You are so loved. Blessings to you, my friend. ❤

  3. Monty is doing a great job keeping from going crazy, I know how he feels are three dogs turn our house into a zoo now and then, but we are thankful for them.
    Did your cats really destroy your blind, wow all are dogs tear up is blanket now and then or a doggy toy once in a while.
    We all I believe in spite of this crazy year we have so much to be thankful for, things could be so much worse. 2020 will go away soon (not soon enough) and the new year will bring relief from the virus and things will get back to something like normal.
    Hope you all have a wonderful thanksgiving as circumstances allow, and your cats don’t drive Monty crazy, remember the cats love you they just don’t show it, it’s all about them (LOL).
    Love,
    Grover

    1. Grover–Yes, indeed. Seamus tore apart the blinds in every room except our bedroom. He just lunges for the middle of them, and he’s too big. They break. Monty rigged up a sweet solution–we have binder clips holding them together. 😊 I agree that there’s much to be thankful for. We’re all well, and though the whole family can’t be together for Thanksgiving, a few of us will. Have a happy Thanksgiving and enjoy whatever family you can be with. Stay well. ❤

  4. This was delightful! I am MOST thankful for you and your kitties and that Monty and all your precious writing! The song was great too. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
