My Favorite Things

A few days ago, I woke up feeling grumpy and out of sorts.  I got out my gratitude journal and made a list of the things in my life that make me happy.  Making that list really did work to lift my spirits.  So today, I thought I’d share that list with you—in the form of song lyrics set to the tune of “My Favorite Things” from “The Sound of Music.”  That version begins with “Raindrops on roses. . . “  Here’s my version:

“My Favorite Things”
– Renee Adele Phillips

Brand new pajamas and bright red June roses
Purring and kneading and tiny pink noses
Nights when we Netflix and chill with the boys
These are some things that I greatly enjoy!

“Little House on the Prairie” and songs by John Denver
Books still to read and the ones I remember
Stephen King novels and crime shows to see—
These are a few of my favorite things!

Aspens in autumn and lilacs in springtime
Birdsong at sunrise and kissing by moonlight
Amazon packages coming on time—
These are the things that make my life sublime!

When I’m wheezing,
Have trouble breathing,
And asthma attacks,
I grab my inhaler and think of these things
And soon air and joy come back!

Joking with Dad and hugging my mother
Spending time laughing with my little brother
Sisters who text me and share funny memes
These are a few of my favorite things!

Date nights with Monty and talking and laughing
Going on road trips with plenty of snacking
Turning the radio up as we sing—
These are a few of my favorite things!

Reading and writing and slowly progressing
Sharing my stories through Poetic Blessings
Meeting new readers with every new post—
These are the things that I love the most!

When I feel pain—
Get a migraine
And think I might die,
I get out an ice pack and think of these things
and I know that I’ll survive!

If you want to put the words to music, this is an instrumental version of “My Favorite Things.”

  1. Sparrow, very light, lyrical, masterful on your part.,But, alas, I am not surprised .Your remarkable writing talent, turns this into a beautiful “symphony”. Normally, my comments are a little more lengthy, but “short and sweet”., .You would enjoy meeting up with Alyssa.,Alyssa, very knowledgeable in the creative writing genre. You two could spend hours, no days, picking each other’s creative writers brain, I would love to be a “Fly on the wall”.,Oh yes, Debbie and I love, “The Sound of Music”, and the incomparable Miss Andrews. Loved this blog, keep on blogging,Sparrow..❤️🤠TexGen

    1. TexGen–thank you for your kind words. After what you’ve told me about AB, I’m sure she and I would have quite a time together. I had a feeling you would love “The Sound of Music.” My mom raised us on all those wonderful musicals. Stay well. Love and Prayers to you and your family.

Thank you, Friend, for the lyrical reminder to focus on the joy that is so easily overlooked when faced with trials, interruptions, and especially migraines!
