Lockdown: A Cat’s Perspective

This afternoon, Monty and I were talking about how the quarantine hasn’t affected us that much. We both work from home. We’re introverts who could go for days without seeing people. We miss being with our families and friends, and, like so many others, we had to cancel many plans that we were looking forward to. But other than that, the order to stay home hasn’t changed our lifestyle that much.

While Monty and I were having this discussion, I saw a look pass between Carrick and Seamus—two of our cats who are sworn enemies. The look wasn’t filled with Seamus’s usual distaste or Carrick’s ever-present challenge to fight. No, this look was as if they were rolling their eyes about what they were hearing—and they were in AGREEMENT about it! Seamus loves expressing himself, so I sat him down at my computer and said that if he had anything important he needed to get off his chest, he was welcome to do it.

This is what he wrote.

“Lockdown: A Cat’s Perspective”
— Seamus Falcon Phillips

I heard my parents talk about this new way of living.
When they say nothing’s changed, I think, Are you kidding?!
Everything’s changed for the three of us cats,
and there’s been more than one change to my mom and my dad.
The changes for us are in our daily routine—
we no longer have one since this weird quarantine.
Mom used to stay up late: I’d purr, and she’d write.
Now Dad’s awake later, so it’s Netflix all night.
Speaking of Dad, his hair’s gotten quite long—
I don’t know what he’s thinking, but it’s gone terribly wrong.
He’s starting to look like a mad scientist,
and Mom’s always in pajamas, her hair in a twist.
They’ve left the house twice to go to the doctor—
both times they wore masks and looked like bank robbers.

It’s not just their appearance; I’ve heard crazy talk
of our food selling out—it’s now out of stock.
I heard Dad say to Mom, “Will they notice new food?”
YES, we will notice! Good lord! Wouldn’t you?
Dad says, “Food is food”—that must be a joke.
This from the man who won’t drink Pepsi, just Coke?
We’re forced to use litter that isn’t our brand;
it’s awful to walk in; it feels like thin sand.

I long for the days of our real litter and food—
for the routine we enjoyed; life was simple and good.
Someday this will end—I’ll sense change in the air
when Mom gets out of her pajamas, and Dad cuts his hair.

  1. How Seamus know are routine down here in Florida up at noon to bed sometime after 4 am or whatever, dogs are really out of sorts their routine is really messed up they don’t know weather to eat or sleep, Jean is drinking Diet Pepsi, instead of Coke Zero witch is really messing with her brain(ha). This is really bad for soda drinkers they could all end up on Dr Pepper (ha) not a pretty thing to watch. Here in Florida the dogs can’t even get trimmed, Chase is really upset, I think I will grow a mullet just what the world needs another old man with a gray mullet, Jean on the other is worried everybody will see her roots.
We trying to make the best of this deal and hope and pray that it will soon pass. Well better go start the car and see if it still runs.
Great post Renee, you all stay safe❤️❤️❤️

    1. Grover–you made me laugh. The animals somehow always know when the smallest thing is different! Poor Jean 😊. Maybe Pepsi is why Monty has a messed up brain. 😊 Your dogs are probably pretty happy that they can’t get groomed. Seamus has to go the vet this week, and he hates that so much. You MUST grow a mullet and document the progression as it grows. On Facebook, with photos. Thank you for the smile your words gave me. And thank you for the reminder to make the best of it. Love to you and Jean and her roots ❤

    1. Poor Shiba. Yes, the animals are getting as restless as we are! I’m so glad you enjoyed the post–thank you for reading it.

  2. Good morning Sparrow. A clever piece of writing by Seamus. He appears to have, a “Cats subtle humor”. Reflecting on this piece, our, Debbie, me, Bradley, has changed, but not much. Debbie’s law firm, has their staff working fr9m h9me, pretty efficient group. Debbie still gets the “time sensitive filings”, she is always on “target”. Once a week, they, office staff, partners have their “coffee chat”, and what has also developed, their offices, throughout U.S. and Europe, and even Beijing, have “assembled” their “playlists”, that we listen to, Friday afternoon, on our patio, with our “favorite beverage”, on “Spotify”, a wonderful playlist, on our I-pad. Me, as music “officienado”, I am in “Hog Heaven”. Debbie and I also “Big” on board games, ove4each weekend 500 rummy, scrabble, Yahtzee, and last Thursday we “kicked off” our 2020 backyard Croquet, “tourney”. I would be remiss if I did not add, I have gotten my Hot Button Electronic Baseball game, please take a minute to “google”, Hot Button Baseball I am in the midst of a “Head to Head” match between, my Yankees and Debbie’s Astros. Pretty evenly matched, I play a doubleheader daily, keep my “scorecards”, we even have the 7th inn8ng stretch, when we are in Houston, we sing, Bradley stands, “Deep in the Heart of Texas”, in the Bronx, it is “God Bless America”……One “off shoot”, of our “social distancing, we use HEB curbside shopping, pretty slick. Finally, no tea” adjustment for Bradley,he still gets his favorite wet and. Dr6 food, delivereD by Petco, favorite litter, and Debbie will “Groom Him Daily”, whic( He Lives. We have, introduced Bradle6 to our outside. Patio, he is fascinated, Debbie and I have go close watch on him, lest he chase sone squirrels up a tree……So, for Debbie and I some adjustments. For Bradley, ,another walk in the park, so to speak….Keep on Blogging Soarrow.❤️🤠TexGen

    1. TexGen–I loved reading your comment. What great ideas you and Debbie have! I especially like the way you still get to have baseball in your life. Great idea! Also love the playlist idea, and I see exactly why you’re in hog heaven (a favorite expression of my mom’s, by the way). Stay safe and be well, my friend. ❤
