Word For My Mother

My parents are in Hawaii, celebrating their 48th anniversary.  And I’m not embarrassed to say that I miss them.  We spend so much of our lives together that it’s strange when they’re gone.  I’ve mentioned before that my mom likes the song, “Ice, Ice Baby.”  And she loves it when Monty and I rap along with it.  Since I miss her, I thought I’d up the ante and write “Ice, Ice Baby” lyrics of my own.  And I got Monty to rap it with me.  You can read the lyrics, below, or you can listen to our audio version—just scroll down and click play.

“A Word for My Mother”

Yo, R.A.P.
Let’s kick it

All right, Mom—take off that lei and listen.
Here’s how it’s been since you went missin’
somewhere, in the isles of Hawaii
doin’ the hula daily and nightly
Will you ever stop?
Yo, we don’t know
You flit like a hummingbird, to and fro
You’re singin’ “Tiny Bubbles”—catchin’ some rays
We’re pale as snowmen and tired of the rain

Thinkin’
About memories here
When you ask me for a rhyme and I give you Shakespeare
quickly—she writes dope poetry
Monty counts a beat and we rap a sick melody
You love it; we rock it
Dad lends an ear
And when we do the running man
Your dogs stand clear.
If they have a problem
we can’t solve it
They’ll have to wait for you to resolve it
No dice, doggies
No dice, doggies
No dice, doggies
No dice, doggies

Now that you both are relaxin’
We’ll fill you in on life in Haxtun:
Yesterday, tornado warnings
While you were on the beach on a sunny morning.
We went to the basement; we survived
but the boys got restless, of treats deprived.
There was thunder when we came upstairs.
We went for a drive—still raining out there
Rollin’ in our Jeep Cherokee
We drove around, splashin’ through Canal Street
Your house is on standby;
Lit like a firefly
Did we stop?
No, we just drove by
Kept on, looking at our next stop—
the business looked fine, still had a rooftop.
That block was good
so Monty said, “Home, Renee—Washington Avenue!”
It’s Tuesday—when you fix a meal
spaghetti, steak—it’s an awesome deal
Our cupboards are empty; we have no food
That puts us both in a very bad mood.
The boys are complaining; their routine is changed
They hiss at each other; blows are exchanged.
Yowling breaks out like a bell
They’re off and running, in the stairwell
Chaos—we thought we were the dream team
Without you we come apart at the seams.

We jump in the Jeep but there’s nowhere to go
You’re a whole world away, in a different time zone
It’s a different scene; you know what we mean
Word to you both; we miss our routine.
If there is a problem,
Who cares? Whatever.
Enjoy your time—you’re in the best place ever:
Paradise baby
Paradise baby
Paradise baby
Paradise baby!
